Introducing... Supermarket-Free February

Well it's the last day of January, and for some reason I have set myself the challenge of going without supermarket shopping for an entire month - starting tomorrow...

I would have backed out of the idea some time ago, except that Ed kindly started telling people about the idea immediately after I voiced it.  This is because he knows that I am a chicken and would try and back out, but more importantly he also knows that I am stubborn, and therefore would refuse to back out once it was public.  Hmph.

I am sceptical of whether anyone is really that interested in the day-to-day operations of my pantry, but a blog has been requested, and so here I am talking into the great void of the Internet...

So, what is the point of this exercise?  It was inspired by reading a book which mentioned some of the ways in which supermarkets, while convenient, aren't actually all that great for us, for local communities or the environment.     here is a website with some propaganda about this if you are interested.  I've thought about some of these ideas before, but I've been fascinated recently by the idea of being supermarket-free - can I actually get through a month without going to the supermarket?  Ed is keen to be involved in the challenge as well, which is just as well since we share a home!

So we've decided to give it a go, in the hope that it will help us do the following:
- support more local producers
- eat more healthy food and less processed junk

- try making more things myself and learn new skills
- eat more organic food

We start tomorrow - and I have been resisting the urge to stock up on essential supplies such as chippies and shampoo.  we'll see how it goes...  I will post updates as well as recipes and other interesting things that I come across during the month.

  1. I really like this idea Jo. I know how influenced I am by supermarket advertising, layout, and convenience, and yet how little I enjoy being in them! I also spend way too much money in them, because even though I go in for one or two "essential" items, I come out with gummi bears and potato chips and some new cleaner for my shower. I think your experiment is timely - I think many people want to grow stuff and buy local and make things and get back to basics. Will watch with interest! And learn.
